April CEO Tools Workshop - King County Group
April 13, 2021
*VIRTUAL* - Driving Accountability In Your Team: Modeling Is Not Enough

You are accountable to your goals and task list. How accountable is your team down to the front line? Their accountability is your responsibility too. How do you take up that responsibility?

In April and May we will expand your concept of a leader’s areas of accountability. And we’ll then focus on the levers you have to drive accountability at every level of your organization.  Executive participants in this program will gain both diagnostic tools, and tactical shaping tools for assessing and creating accountability.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR A CEO AND THEIR BUSINESS

Without accountability, you get no reliability. Without reliability you get no velocity, no performance – or less than optimal performance.
Two things are necessary for healthy accountability to thrive.

Support provides an environment in which people are willing to be accountable.
Challenge demands excellence and reliability without wiggle room.

If you occasionally fall off the accountability wagon – drop commitments – your people will notice. They will tell themselves that it is ok for them to drop commitments too. This means that the bottom line is you must be accountable. And… Modeling accountability is not enough to ensure that the culture of your company and your people embrace and practice accountability.

When people take responsibility for their behavior, their performance, and their results — you get trust and traction. So, driving accountability in and through your company is one of your jobs.

This program will challenge you to create an environment that fosters a high level of transparency, engagement, and commitment for an immediate increase in traction and team results.

SPECIFIC TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES YOU WILL LEARN AND PRACTICE

  • Distinction between ACCOUNTABILITY and RELIABILITY so you can drive action and growth
  • Challenge/Support Matrix — a tool to troubleshoot the gaps in accountability on your team: both behavioral gaps and structural gaps
  • Distinction between CIRCUMSTANCES and RESPONSIBILITY and how to create a “no-excuses” workplace.
  • Feedback model for acquainting people with reality as a support to their success and a challenge for their excellence
  • Weekly 1:1s: You may already be doing them, and this program will help you insure they strengthen your relationships and drive results.

QUESTIONS THE CEO SHOULD BE ASKING

  • What behaviors have you been tolerating in your company that degrade your team’s excellence and/or traction (start with your own behaviors)?
  • How far from impeccable must your team (or you yourself) stray before you address it?
  • Where in your company is performance demanded without the relevant support being given? (Look for places where the same failure repeats and where that failure is met only with a demand to do better.)
